Risk assessment and management
to improve the protection of the food allergic consumer
Currently, there is no treatment for food allergy except the avoidance of food products containing proteins to which the consumer is allergic. There is a demand for enhanced allergen and allergy management in order to protect the food allergic consumer. Program Line 1 focusses on the development and implementation of quantative risk assessment and guidance for precautionary labeling by food companies. Four key research areas will be covered:
- food consumption
- estimation of contamination
- allergen risk assessment
- allergen risk management
It will provide food industry with improved allergen management tools and enable them to reduce the risks and costs associated with unintended cross-contamination and/or other allergen-related issues. This will contribute to offer a safe food choice for allergic consumers.
