From the 18th till 20th of April several TNO colleagues were present at the Symposium “Frontiers in Food Allergy and Allergen Risk Assessment and Management” organized by ILSI in Madrid, Spain. From TNO Astrid Kruizinga, Geert Houben, Ben Remington and Marty Blom attended the meeting.
The purpose of the meeting was to disseminate the knowledge developed in the EU project iFAAM (2013-2017) and besides former iFAAM members, the meeting was attended by authorities, industry and other stakeholders. TNO had a significant role in the iFAAM project both as leader of one of the work packages (led by Astrid Kruizinga) as well in the scientific development. A risk assessment framework was developed enabling an evaluation of the allergen risks pertaining to a production line, process or factory. For tools developed in iFAAM, see our news item on the iFAAM end report.
Marty Blom was invited to present the Tiered Risk assessment approach. In addition to that Marty Blom and Ben Remington together with Luca Bucchini of Hylobates (Italy) and Joe Baumert of FARRP (USA) organized an interactive session for the participants to lead them through the elements of this systematic risk identification and assessment framework including several case studies with the aim of providing knowledge on how to use the iFAAM tiered risk assessment.
Both sessions were received well and can be viewed back on the ILSI webpage upon request.
